WESLACO, Texas – The Economic Development Corporation of Weslaco (EDCW) contributed $29,000 to the Region One Education Service Center (ESC) Teacher Alternative Certification Program to support up to six aspiring teachers in the Weslaco area. The funding will help offset program costs for participants working toward their state teacher certification and entering the classroom.
A partnership designation ceremony was held Wednesday, April 29, 2026 at 1:30 PM at Weslaco City Hall Legislative Chambers to commemorate the partnership.
“Improving human capital in Weslaco has been a priority for the EDCW, and this partnership with Region One Education Service Center allows us to stay aligned with that mission,” said Steven M. Valdez, Executive Director of the Weslaco EDC. “When a degreed paraprofessional or aspiring teacher is able to create a better life for themselves and their families through increased earning potential within their profession, and the EDCW can help make that pathway possible, it represents the kind of meaningful, community-driven impact we strive to achieve every day.”
As the national demand for qualified educators continues, this partnership helps expand opportunities for individuals to pursue teacher certification and reach their professional goals.
“There is always a need for quality teachers, and many individuals face financial barriers that can delay or prevent them from entering the classroom,” said Marissa Falcon, Region One ESC Administrator for Educator Preparation & Development. “These funds help remove critical barriers and make it possible for future teachers to take the next step toward certification, making a lasting impact in our community.”
Through Region One ESC’s Teacher Alternative Certification Program, participants receive structured training, mentorship, and support as they work toward becoming fully certified educators. The program is designed to address teacher shortages while preparing candidates for long-term success in the classroom.
“Programs like this are about building a stronger future workforce right here in Weslaco,” said Sandra Charlton, Weslaco EDC Board President. “By creating clear opportunities for paraprofessionals to become certified teachers, we’re not only investing in individual success, we’re strengthening our classrooms, supporting our students, and reinforcing the long-term economic stability of our community. This is the kind of forward-thinking partnership that delivers lasting value for Weslaco.”
