PHARR, Texas – PSJA ISD announced the successful completion of its inaugural Aspiring Assistant Principals Academy, a rigorous leadership development initiative designed to strengthen the district’s internal leadership pipeline and prepare the next generation of campus administrators.
The academy culminated on May 14, 2026, when the cohort of 30 educators presented a “Problem of Practice” to current principals and district leaders, showcasing the leadership skills, strategic thinking, and innovative solutions they developed throughout the program.

Launched in November 2025, the academy was created as part of PSJA ISD’s continued commitment to growing leaders from within and building a sustainable culture of excellence across the district. Following the success of the PSJA Leadership Academy for aspiring principals, the district expanded its leadership development efforts to include future assistant principals.
“The successful completion of this academy is a reflection of PSJA ISD’s investment in our people,” said Assistant Superintendent for Academics Ranulfo Marquez. “We are intentionally preparing strong leaders who understand our district culture, believe in our mission, and are ready to support student success from day one.”
Throughout the academy, participants engaged in intensive leadership sessions, hands-on workshops, simulations, and collaborative problem-solving experiences focused on the realities of campus leadership. The final presentations allowed cohort members to apply their learning to authentic campus challenges while demonstrating their readiness for administrative leadership roles.
“This initiative was designed to be transformational, not just instructional,” said Dr. Nora Rivas Garza, Executive Officer for Secondary Schools and chair of the academy’s planning committee. “These educators demonstrated tremendous professionalism, leadership capacity, and commitment to continuous improvement throughout the academy. We are excited to see the impact they will continue to make across our schools.”
The inaugural cohort represented a diverse group of accomplished educators from across PSJA ISD, including teachers, curriculum coordinators, counselors, and campus leaders. To qualify, participants were required to hold a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership, possess a Principal certificate, and have at least three years of professional experience.
“Being part of this academy allowed me to view leadership through a different lens and helped me grow both professionally and personally,” said Science Curriculum Coordinator Denise Garcia, member of the inaugural cohort. “Each session, led by our outstanding district leaders, provided valuable insight into the tools, mindset, and skills needed to become the kind of leader I strive to be. More than anything, this experience reminded me that leadership is not about having all the answers, but about continuing to learn, grow, and inspire those around you.”
The academy was developed collaboratively by district leaders representing multiple departments, including Human Resources, Executive Offices, Professional Development, Assessment, and Communications & Marketing, ensuring participants received a comprehensive leadership experience aligned with district expectations and goals.
“With the completion of this rigorous initiative, these staff members are now eligible to be part of our Assistant Principal Candidate Pool,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Alejandro Elias. “This academy demonstrates PSJA ISD’s deep commitment to investing in our employees and creating opportunities for advancement within our district. We are proud to continue developing leaders who will positively shape the future of our schools and communities.”
As graduates of the academy officially enter the district’s Assistant Principal Candidate Pool, PSJA ISD continues to reinforce its long-standing commitment to leadership development, succession planning, and educational excellence through intentional investment in its employees.
