The City of McAllen Summer Internship Program is now underway, launching a 10-week paid initiative that invests in the next generation by providing college students and recent graduates with valuable professional experience.

This week, interns officially began placements across municipal departments, where they will work alongside experienced professionals, develop practical skills, and gain firsthand insight into public service and local government operations.

The initiative reflects McAllen’s commitment to education, career readiness, and workforce development by providing students opportunities to explore careers in municipal government in areas including human resources, accounting, computer science, forensic science, and other public service fields.

“McAllen’s greatest investment is in its people,” said Mayor Javier Villalobos. “Through programs like this, we are creating opportunities for young professionals to grow, lead, and contribute to the future success of our community while gaining the experience they need to achieve their own goals.”

This year marks the third year of the internship program, welcoming students from universities including The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, South Texas College, and St. Mary’s University. Since the program began, 61 students have participated, with one former intern transitioning into a full-time role. Sofia Flores joined the Human Resources team in Spring 2025 following her participation in the program.

“By creating opportunities for students today, McAllen continues building a stronger workforce, developing future leaders, and investing in a brighter tomorrow for the entire community,” said City Manager Isaac J. Tawil.

Students interested in future opportunities may submit a resume and field of interest to careers@mcallen.net. Updates are available through the McAllen Career Opportunities portal and the City of McAllen TX Government Facebook page.
