The McAllen ISD Family has a long tradition of helping others in need and Hurricane Harvey has sparked this same humanitarian response.

Many of our neighbors north of the Rio Grande Valley have chosen to seek temporary shelter in our own communities. The district is reaching out to them to offer assistance, particularly for the children. Our priority is to help the families as they work to acquire aid and to place the children into a classroom as quickly as possible in order to reduce the amount of instruction missed before they return home.

Here is the process the District has put into place for families displaced by Hurricane Harvey:

• Contact the McAllen ISD Office of Student Support Services at 956-618-6031. It will enroll the students and serve as the district’s information center.

• As students are enrolled, the McAllen ISD Office of State and Federal Programs will ensure students are provided with clothes, toiletries, and school supplies. Social Services will also be available for students and their families, if needed.

Families that are displaced as a result of the hurricane can still enroll without documentation. McAllen ISD can also send teams to local hotels to assist the parents, if needed. McAllen ISD staff is also reaching out to the American Red Cross and other emergency responders, as well as to the Texas Education Agency to offer aid.

The first day of classes for McAllen ISD is Monday, August 28.
