EDINBURG, Texas – Hidalgo County Health & Human Services will host a kickoff event for its initiative providing free Narcan through vending machines at locations throughout Hidalgo County. The event will be held on Tuesday, September 8 at 9 a.m. at the Health & Human Services Administration building, located at 1304 S. 25th Ave. in Edinburg.

Naloxone, commonly known by the brand name Narcan, is a medication that can rapidly reverse an opioid overdose. The vending machines provide naloxone free of charge.

Representatives from Hidalgo County Health & Human Services, the Hidalgo County DA HIDTA Task Force, and Behavioral Health Solutions of South Texas will discuss the need for expanded access to free naloxone and how the vending machines support local overdose prevention efforts. A demonstration will show how residents can obtain free naloxone from the vending machine.
