McALLEN, Texas – September is the perfect time to discover more, learn something new and explore at the McAllen Public Library (MPL). During Library Card Sign-Up Month, residents are invited to get a free card and take advantage of the many resources, programs and services available.

This year, children signing up for their first library card have something special to look forward to: Marty the Library Cat is making his debut with a new design, giving young readers a fun way to celebrate their love of reading while connecting them to a world of possibilities.

At MPL, more than 330,000 items are within reach to include: eBooks, audiobooks, streaming movies, eMagazines, online resources, educational tools, technology, programs and services. Whether finding a new favorite book, exploring a digital resource, attending a program or learning new skills, there is something for everyone.

Celebrated annually, Library Card Sign-Up Month is an initiative of the American Library Association that encourages people to get a library card and explore all it has to offer. This year’s theme, “A Library Card Hits All the Right Notes,” highlights the wide range of interests and experiences available to the community.

“A library card opens the door, but what happens next is up to you,” said Library Director Kate P. Horan. “At MPL, residents can follow their curiosity, discover new interests and find opportunities to learn, create and connect. We are proud to be a place where curiosity thrives.”

“For children, access to the library can spark curiosity, build confidence and inspire a lifelong love of learning,” said City Manager Isaac J. Tawil. “These opportunities help young people explore their interests and discover what they are capable of achieving.”

“Libraries belong to everyone,” said Mayor Javier Villalobos. “Whether you read, attend a program, use a computer or spend time in a welcoming space, there is always a place for you at MPL.”
