Yaneli Rios’ journey at South Texas College is one of resilience, passion and family support. At 24 years old, Rios is nearing the completion of her Interdisciplinary Studies degree, a path she chose for its versatility and connection to her dream of shaping future generations.

“I decided on this career path because interdisciplinary is so broad,” Rios explained. “I can pick from various subjects and focus on what I enjoy most.”

Her decision to switch to Interdisciplinary Studies came after an initial semester in Criminal Justice, which left her feeling uncertain. After consulting with her advisors, she found a path that felt more natural. Now, Rios is set to finish her degree this December and has big plans for her future as a teacher.

Despite her academic commitments, Rios balances her studies with her responsibilities as a mother of two daughters, who are her greatest motivators.

“Having kids while working on your academic goals doesn’t ruin your goals; your goals only get stronger,” Rios said. “My daughters will hopefully look up to me one day, and that means I must keep working hard. The cycle of academic struggles ends with me.”

Her time at STC has been marked by supportive faculty and unforgettable memories with classmates.

“STC has provided me with amazing advisors and professors who understand that being a parent and a student at the same time is not easy,” she said, reflecting on the guidance she’s received during challenging times.

Looking ahead, Rios dreams of becoming a sixth-grade teacher, a pivotal time she believes can help shape young minds for academic success.

“I believe sixth grade is the perfect time to mold their minds into becoming good students for the rest of their academic years,” she said.

As Rios prepares to graduate as a first-generation college student  and staying true to her goals.
