Palmview, Texas – In response to community interest and in an effort to encourage public input regarding city ordinances regulating the movement and parking of heavy trucks in the city that have been in effect for many years, the City of Palmview hosted a community town hall meeting on Thursday, February 25, 2021. The purpose of the town hall meeting was to allow city officials to explain the background and relevance of the ordinances and the reasoning for enforcing the ordinances, as well as to allow for public comment in regard to the ordinances.

An audience of approximately 75 masked and social-distanced attendees were present at the town hall meeting, which was situated as per recommended CDC guidelines. All city council members were in attendance as well. City Attorney Eric Flores moderated the town hall meeting, which began with a presentation by City Manager Michael Leo. Leo gave an overview of the background of the ordinances, the reasons why it was determined that the ordinances should be more strictly enforced, and answered some of the questions that had been asked on social media and in a recent impromptu meeting outside city hall. Project Manager Hinojosa Engineering was on-hand to describe the general composition of residential road construction, which is not designed to withstand the weight of heavy trucks.

After the city’s presentation, community members were given the opportunity to address the members of the council and deliver remarks. Overall, the feedback was positive, as members of the community were appreciative of the council’s willingness to hear their concerns. Some community members were grateful that the council was addressing safety and road issues; some members of the public representing the trucking community were concerned that their trucking businesses would be affected by the ordinances.
