RIO GRANDE VALLEY – Freshman Maya Chitman scored her first-career goal to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s soccer team past the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners 1-0 on Sunday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.

In the 57th minute, the Vaqueros (9-4-2, 2-2-1 WAC) had multiple scoring opportunities turned away. One of the clear out attempts came to junior Matilyn Hepker, who headed the ball forward. Chitman got the ball at her feet and turned right past Dome Rodriguez and deked Chelsee Duran before moving left and sending a lob shot from outside the box over the outstretched arms of a leaping Andrea Neves (7-8-1) to make the score 1-0.

Senior Kinga Szemik (8-4-2) made the goal stand up by recording seven saves for her sixth shutout of the season and 16th of her career.
