EDINBURG, Texas – Edinburg Police Chief Jaime Ayala has officially announced his upcoming retirement from the Edinburg Police Department, effective October 30, 2026. Chief Ayala, who took the reins of the department in October 2021, will conclude a distinguished five-year leadership tenure in Edinburg before returning to North Texas to spend quality time with his family.
“Serving as Police Chief in the city where I grew up has been the absolute honor of my career,” Chief Ayala said. “I am deeply grateful to the city leadership, our officers, staff, and the community for their unwavering support over the past five years. As I prepare to return to North Texas to spend cherished time with my family, I leave knowing that the Edinburg Police Department is stronger, safer, and positioned for continued excellence.”

Chief Ayala’s career in law enforcement represents a full-circle journey rooted in the local community. A 1983 graduate of Edinburg High School, he began his dedication to public service in his hometown early on, working as a volunteer reserve officer and a dispatcher for the Edinburg Police Department. Prior to returning to lead the agency, Chief Ayala served for 32 years with the Arlington Police Department, where he rose through the ranks to Assistant Police Chief.
During his five years leading a force of 266 officers and professional personnel, Chief Ayala kept the Edinburg Police Department at the forefront of modern law enforcement practices and community-oriented policing. Under his leadership, the department instituted cutting-edge public safety strategies and proactive community outreach initiatives, including:
- Drone as a First Responder Program: Implemented the RGV’s first operational drone program to enhance rapid situational awareness during critical incidents.
- Business Watch Program:Â Established formal partnerships with local commercial owners and businesses to deter crime and foster economic security.
- Dog Walker Watch:Â Empowered local pet owners and residents to act as extra eyes and ears for law enforcement in neighborhood corridors.
- “Make a Plan” Campaign:Â Launched a comprehensive educational and enforcement initiative aimed at combating driving while intoxicated (DWI) across the city.
