PHARR, Texas – All 26 Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District (PSJA ISD) elementary schools have been selected to participate in the Texas Department of Agriculture’s (TDA) 2026-27 Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP), providing students at participating campuses with additional opportunities to enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables and learn about healthy eating.

The federally funded program is designed to introduce children to a variety of fresh produce, including locally grown foods, while providing nutrition education that encourages healthy eating habits.

Beginning in October 2026, participating PSJA ISD campuses will offer fresh fruits and vegetables to students at least twice each week, outside the regular meal service times. The program is designed to encourage students to try new foods and become more familiar with healthy choices.

“We are pleased to provide our students with additional opportunities to experience fresh fruits and vegetables while learning how nutritious food choices can support their health and well-being,” said PSJA ISD Superintendent Dr. Alejandro Elias. “Programs like the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program complement the work of our schools and families by helping students build healthy habits that can benefit them throughout their lives.”

The FFVP is funded through a reimbursement grant administered by TDA. Participating campuses will provide fresh produce consistently throughout the school year, with the program continuing through the last day of school or until available funds are exhausted, whichever comes first.

PSJA ISD Child Nutrition Administrator Juan Contreras said the program will provide students with options to explore foods they may not otherwise have the opportunity to try at school.

“Introducing students to fresh fruits and vegetables in a way that is fun, accessible and appealing can make a real difference in how they view healthy foods,” Contreras said. “Our Child Nutrition team is committed to making these offerings an engaging experience for students while supporting their nutritional needs and helping them develop positive eating habits.”

Participating PSJA ISD campuses were selected based on a high percentage of students eligible for free and reduced-price meals. The FFVP is available only at selected sites due to limited program funding.

Through its Child Nutrition Department, PSJA ISD continues to provide students with nutritious meals and educational opportunities that support student success inside and outside the classroom.
