Women’s Basketball Closes Out Signing Class with Addition of Iyana Dorsey

RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s basketball head coach Lane Lord announced on Tuesday the addition of guard Iyana Dorsey, who spent two seasons at Tarleton,for the 2022-23 academic year closing out this year’s signing class.

Dorsey spent her freshman and sophomore seasons with the Texans where she played in 50 career games, while making 42 starts, and averaged 12.1 points, 1.8 assists, and 1.8 steals per game. 

This past season, Dorsey led the Texans with 10.4 points per game while ranking second on the team in three-pointers made (30) and steals (41). She also led her team with an .838 free throw shooting percentage, which ranked fourth best in the Western Athletic Conference.

“We are excited to announce the signing of Iyana to V-Nation,” Lord said. “Iyana is an outstanding combo guard that can really score the basketball. She is proven player in the WAC, and she has been of the top scoring guards her freshman and sophomore seasons. Iyana is also an outstanding defender leading her team in steals and deflections. Iyana will be an impact player for the Vaqueros next season.”

In her freshman season, Dorsey led the Texans in total points (344) while ranking second with 13.8 points per game. She also led her team in free throw shooting percentage (.836), which also led the WAC, three-point pointers made (54), free throws made (102), assists (57), steals (47), and minutes per game (29.8). 

Dorsey was one of two players to start and play in all 25 games for the Texans and was one of only three freshmen to earn All-WAC honors as she earned All-WAC Honorable Mention as she ranked third in the WAC in total points, including leading all freshman. 

Dorsey, originally from Saginaw, TX, lettered four years in basketball at Birdville High School where she was District 7-A MVP in her junior and senior years while also earning Defensive Player of the Year honors as a senior. Dorsey wrapped up her career as the program leader in total points, points per game, field goals made, three-pointers made, free throw percentage, and steals.

Dorsey is the daughter of Wendall and Misty and has two sisters, Daisha and Destiny. Dorsey joins Deborah Ogayemi, Aaliyah McMillan, Mariam Traore, Mele Kailahi, Tierra Trotter, Zariah Sango, Charlotte O’Keefe, and Ashton McCorry as part of this year’s signing class.
