RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) unveiled on Monday the latest regional rankings, with The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women’s cross country team coming in at No. 12, an improvement of two spots over the previous week.

UTRGV passed SMU and rival Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the rankings after a strong showing at the competitive Chile Pepper Festival on Saturday. UTRGV finished 15th out of 27 teams with an average 5K time of 18:29.

Two runners entered the record book, as sophomore Dorcas Koech finished 19th out of 267 with a program-record time of 17:10.7. Freshman Sharon Koima came in 64th with a time of 17:56.5, the eighth-fastest in program history.

UTRGV is back in action on Oct. 19 at Texas A&M’s Arturo Barrio Invitational. The men compete in an 8K at 9 a.m. while the women compete in a 6K at 9:45. This meet will count toward the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi will be competing as well.
