Two Program Records Fall During UTRGV Indoor Track & Field Season Opener

COLLEGE STATION â€“ The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) track & field teams opened the 2020 indoor season by breaking two program records and a meet record on Friday at the Ted Nelson Invitational, hosted by Texas A&M, at Gilliam Indoor Track & Field Stadium at McFerrin Athletic Center.

Sophomore Alexandrea Hurst shattered the program and meet records in the shot put with a mark of 15.61 meters. The previous program record was 15.31 meters, set by teammate Samariae Bonds, now a sophomore, last season. The previous meet record was 14.94 meters, set by Kristine Hanks of Sam Houston State in 2017. Bonds surpassed the former meet record as well, coming in second with a throw of 15.06 meters, the fifth-best in program history.

Bonds added a weight throw of 17.48 meters, the fourth-best in program history, to finish fourth.

Freshman Ackeem Gordon had a big collegiate debut, breaking the program record in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.94 seconds in the preliminaries. He followed that up with a 6.96 in the final, tied for the third-fastest time in program history.

Senior Paul May won the shot put with a throw of 16.25 meters, the third-best in program history.

Junior Abraham Chirchir won the 3,000-meter run by finishing in a time of 8:33.02, the seventh-fastest time in program history.

Senior Idatonye Cheetham-West had a strong start to her season, recording the fifth-best long jump in program history by placing fifth with a distance of 5.87 meters. She followed that up with a 7.72 in the 60-meter dash preliminaries, the seventh-fastest time in program history, and a 7.80 to place sixth in the finals, tied for the 10th-fastest time.

In his collegiate debut, freshman Torry Holmes recorded the third-fastest 60-meter hurdles in program history, placing seventh with a time of 8.33 in the preliminaries and then earning a point by finishing eighth with an 8.89 in the finals.

Sophomore Brownsville Veterans alum Max Carmona recorded the fifth-fastest 800-meter run in program history, placing second with a time of 1:53.95.

In their collegiate debuts, freshmen Mystique Brown and Tamara Woodleyrecorded the 10th-fastest times in program history in their events, with Brown running a 25.29 200-meter dash and Woodley running a 57.61 400-meter dash.

As a team, the women finished fourth out of 18 while the men came in fourth out of 17.

UTRGV is back in action on Jan. 25 at the Texas A&M Invitational.
