BROWNSVILLE, Texas – Texas Southmost College welcomed veterans, active-duty service members, elected officials and community members Friday, May 22, 2026, to honor fallen heroes during its Flags on the Lawn event at Old Fort Brown Cemetery.

Flags on the Lawn paid tribute to the hundreds of American soldiers once buried at the former military cemetery on the present-day TSC campus, as well as all service members who died while in active duty.

Ernie Aliseda, associate vice president and chief operating officer of the Texas A&M Higher Education Center at McAllen and a retired U.S. Army colonel, served as the event’s keynote speaker.

“This land carried the memory of military service, sacrifice and loss,” Aliseda said. “It is connected Fort Brown, to Brownsville, Texas and the story of our nation. Today these flags represent more than just flags on the ground. A flag placed here carries a name, a story and a family’s grief, pride and love.”
The event was part of TSC’s Centennial Celebration, and one of four anniversary events sponsored by H‑E‑B, reflecting the company’s support of the college’s 100-year milestone.
