Rodolfo “Rudy” Ramirez, Executive Director of the McAllen Housing Commission, used the 2026 McHC Scholarship Banquet to deliver a message centered on education, perseverance, and opportunity, urging scholarship recipients to continue their studies and return one day to support future generations.
Ramirez opened the June 18 event by welcoming students, families, elected officials, community partners, educators, and sponsors who gathered at the Verta Hotel to celebrate the accomplishments of 19 scholarship recipients. Throughout the evening, he emphasized that the scholarship program represents a long-term investment in students and the community’s future.
According to Ramirez, the scholarship initiative is funded through the annual Robert “Bobby” Calvillo Home Is Where the Heart Is 5K fundraiser. He reported that the program has awarded scholarships to 78 students over the past five years and distributed more than $103,000 in educational assistance. This year, the organization awarded $23,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors pursuing higher education.
Ramirez said the mission of the McAllen Housing Commission extends beyond housing assistance. “When we invest in young people, we invest in the future of our community,” he told attendees. “Education opens doors, creates opportunities, and helps build the leaders of tomorrow.”
During his closing remarks, Ramirez spoke directly to the scholarship recipients about the value of higher education. Drawing from his own experience, he shared that he was raised by a single mother who worked hard to support her family and encouraged him to remain positive and never lose hope. He challenged students to pursue opportunities, build professional networks, and take advantage of the resources available to them in college.
Ramirez also used his own educational journey as an example of lifelong learning. “I got my master’s degree at 60 years old,” he told the audience, encouraging students to continue learning throughout their lives. He described education as a pathway to greater career opportunities, professional growth, and financial stability.
In addition to recognizing students, Ramirez thanked the businesses, organizations, and individuals who contributed to the scholarship fund. He noted that federal housing funds cannot be used for scholarship programs, making community support essential to the initiative’s success. He described the scholarship recipients as the outcome of those collective efforts and encouraged them to remain connected to the community as they advance in their careers.
Ramirez also announced that Cantu Construction had provided an additional $500 for each scholarship recipient, increasing the support available to students as they prepare for college. He thanked the company’s leadership and the many sponsors who contributed to the fundraiser and scholarship program.
McAllen Mayor Pro-Tem and City Commissioner District 6 Pepe Cabeza de Vaca echoed Ramirez’s message about the importance of education and opportunity. Addressing the scholarship recipients, Cabeza de Vaca praised their dedication and accomplishments. “You guys went ahead and put the effort, you put the dedication and the passion into what you’re doing, and now you’re being rewarded with it,” he said. “As a city, we know that education has a lasting impact. It opens doors, creates opportunities, and strengthens families and communities for generations to come.”
As the banquet concluded, Ramirez encouraged recipients to stay focused on their goals, manage their time wisely, seek help when needed, and take advantage of educational opportunities. He described higher education as a powerful tool for creating generational wealth and improving quality of life.
Hidalgo County Precinct 2 Commissioner Eduardo “Eddie” Cantu reinforced the value of perseverance and lifelong learning during his keynote address. Encouraging students to remain focused on their goals, Cantu told the recipients, “Celebrate every accomplishment, no matter how small or how great. Take pride in how far you’ve come, but remember that success is built one day at a time.” He also reminded students that the scholarship represents confidence in their future. “The scholarship you’re receiving tonight is not simply financial assistance. It’s a reminder that others see potential in you, even greater than you may see in yourself today.”
Addressing the students one final time, Ramirez urged them to remember the support they received and to one day help others achieve similar opportunities. “Never stop learning,” he said. “May God bless all of you.”
