Hidalgo County Precinct 2 Commissioner Eduardo “Eddie” Cantu encouraged students to pursue their education with discipline, faith, and determination during his keynote address at the 2026 McAllen Housing Commission Scholarship Banquet held June 18 at the Verta Hotel in McAllen.

The banquet recognized 19 scholarship recipients from McAllen-area high schools and brought together students, families, educators, elected officials, community partners, and supporters. The annual event is part of the McAllen Housing Commission’s effort to promote educational opportunities for residents and assist graduating seniors pursuing higher education.

Speaking directly to the students, Cantu congratulated the recipients and urged them to celebrate their accomplishments while remaining focused on their future goals. “Celebrate every accomplishment, no matter how small or how great,” Cantu said. “Take pride in how far you’ve come, but remember that success is built one day at a time.”

Cantu reflected on his own educational journey, sharing that he graduated from PSJA High School before earning a business degree from St. Mary’s University and a law degree from The University of Texas School of Law. He told students that his achievements did not happen overnight and credited persistence, self-belief, and the support of others for helping him reach his goals.

Throughout his remarks, Cantu emphasized the importance of seeking assistance when challenges arise. He advised students to use available resources, connect with professors, and remain committed to their studies. “Don’t be afraid to ask for help,” he said. “Your professors want to help you succeed, and colleges often have countless resources that you’re already paying for. Use them.”

Cantu also spoke about service to others, quoting Mother Teresa: “Not all of us can do great things, but we can do small things with great love.” He encouraged recipients to measure success not only by personal achievements but also by their willingness to help others and contribute to their communities.

Faith was another central theme of his address. Cantu urged students to rely on their families, friends, and spiritual beliefs as they move into the next stage of their lives. Quoting Jeremiah 29:11, he reminded students that their future holds opportunity and purpose. “The scholarship you’re receiving tonight is not simply financial assistance,” Cantu said. “It’s a reminder that others see potential in you, even greater than you may see in yourself today.”

Earlier in the evening, McAllen Housing Commission Executive Director Rodolfo “Rudy” Ramirez spoke about the organization’s commitment to education and long-term opportunity. Ramirez noted that the scholarship program represents one way the agency helps families build stronger futures. “When we invest in young people, we invest in the future of our community,” Ramirez said. “Education opens doors, creates opportunities, and helps build the leaders of tomorrow.”

According to Ramirez, the scholarship program is funded through the annual Robert “Bobby” Calvillo Home Is Where the Heart Is 5K fundraiser. Over the past five years, the program has awarded scholarships to 78 students and distributed more than $103,000 to support higher education.

The banquet concluded with the presentation of scholarship certificates to 19 students representing McAllen High School, Memorial High School, Nikki Rowe High School, IDEA McAllen, IDEA Los Encinos, and PSJA North High School. Recipients were recognized for their academic achievements and future educational plans as they prepare to begin the next chapter of their academic careers.
