Keep Texas Beautiful is proud to recognize the ten winners of the 2023 Governor’s Community Achievement Awards (GCAA) for outstanding community improvement. The 2023 GCAA winners are Collinsville, Chandler, Nolanville, Henderson, Dickinson, Lake Jackson, Burleson, Pflugerville, McAllen, and Frisco.

From Collinsville, with a population of only 1,931 in north Texas, to McAllen near the Mexican border, these communities share a commitment to making Texas clean and beautiful.

This year, the ten winning communities will share $2 million in landscape funding for a landscaping project to be completed by TxDOT along a state-maintained right-of-way.

Sara Walters, KTB’s Program Director said, “This year the Governor’s Community Achievement Award received over 60 applications from around the state and through the competitive judging process only ten winners could be chosen. Three of these communities are celebrating their first Governor’s Community Achievement Award ever and we are so proud of their efforts. These ten winning communities represent the hard work and dedication taking place to make Texas a better place to live, work and play for all Texans.”

The Governor’s Community Achievement Award is one of the most coveted annual environmental and community improvement honors in Texas. A community’s environmental program is judged by a group of diverse, multi-sector judges on achievements in seven environmental and community improvement areas: public awareness and outreach, environmental education, beautification and community improvement, litter prevention and cleanup, solid waste management, litter law and illegal dumping enforcement.  Keep Texas Beautiful (KTB), in partnership with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), has awarded the GCAA to Texas communities for over 50 years.

I am so grateful for the passion and dedication of Keep McAllen Beautiful to always strive to find new and creative ways to not only clean up our community, but to inspire residents and businesses to get involved and continue to keep McAllen clean and even more beautiful,” said McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos.  “Keep McAllen Beautiful is so deserving of the Governor’s Community Achievement Award.”

The GCAA program has recognized outstanding communities since 1969, with TxDOT providing landscaping award funding since 1985. The ten winners will be honored during KTB’s Annual Conference, which will take place in Houston, TX  at the Westin Galleria from June 26 through June 28, with an awards dinner and presentation on the evening of June 28.
