Funds will help Sharyland Independent School District implement Project STart
WASHINGTON – Congressman Henry Cuellar (D-TX28) today announced that Sharyland Independent School District will receive almost $1.2 million in federal funding over the next three years from a Department of Education elementary and secondary school counseling grant.
“Sharyland ISD does a great job of serving local students and this investment in our students in primary and secondary education will only build upon the great work they are already doing,” Congressman Cuellar said. “The funds will help Sharyland students receive well-rounded educations that will prepare them for the next steps in their education and in life—I can’t think of a better investment.”
“The Sharyland school district is honored to have received the Department of Education’s three-year Project STart Grant,” Dr. Filomena Leo, Interim Superintendent of Schools. “The funds provided will allow us to focus greater efforts on behalf of k-6th grade students who may be at-risk. The objectives of increased advocacy and engagement among parents, counselors and students can only bring greater benefits for learning success. We appreciate the support of Congressman Cuellar and his staff and we anticipate a rewarding experience for all.”
The school district plans to implement Project STart with the grant funds. Project STart will serve over 5,378 kindergarten through 6th grade students annually over a three-year period in eight high-need elementary schools in South Texas along the Mexico border and will aim to meet three main objectives which include goals of improving academic performance, improving attitude and character, and creating a support system of parents, community leaders, and educators for students.
