All information in the election night returns portal is reported by Texas counties. The Texas secretary of state’s office does not alter or modify the data provided in any way. County officials may update election results on their own web sites or to the media before updating results through the Texas secretary of state’s portal.
The Candidates for Mission, incumbent Mayor Armando O’Caña, and his challenger Norie Gonzalez Garza will be holding a Candidate Forum. Futuro RGV hosts the event to discuss the issues that will affect the City of Mission, the city’s future, and the people who have chosen to call Mission home.
The forum will be held tonight, May 24, from 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm.
This is the time to get involved and know your candidates. Every vote counts, and every voter should be well informed. This is the perfect opportunity to show your support and possibly decide who you would like to oversee your city.
Early voting is from Mat 31-June 7, 2022, and Election Day is June 7, 2022.

AUSTIN, Texas – Governor Greg Abbott today issued a statement following the shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde:
“Texans across the state are grieving for the victims of this senseless crime and for the community of Uvalde. Cecilia and I mourn this horrific loss and we urge all Texans to come together to show our unwavering support to all who are suffering. We thank the courageous first responders who worked to finally secure Robb Elementary School. I have instructed the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Rangers to work with local law enforcement to fully investigate this crime. The Texas Division of Emergency Management is charged with providing local officials all resources necessary to respond to this tragedy as the State of Texas works to ensure the community has what it needs to heal.”

PHARR, Texas – Two Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD (PSJA ISD) campuses were named recipients of grants from the Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries. Raul H. Yzaguirre Middle School in San Juan and Berta Palacios Elementary in Pharr were two of only 300 schools from across the nation to receive the $5,000 grants.
The Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries supports school libraries with the greatest needs with the goal of encouraging all students to develop a love of reading and learning. Since its inception in 2002, it has awarded more than $19.5 million to more than 3,300 schools across the country.
“I am thrilled that children from 300 schools will soon have access to an updated library collection,” Mrs. Laura Bush said in the press release. “Students across the country turn to books to discover the world around them, and we know that opening a new book opens the door to new opportunities and learning.”
This year, the Laura Bush Foundation awarded more than $1.5 million in grants to school libraries. Librarians Narda Lugo and Gloria Covarrubias serve as librarians at Yzaguirre Middle School and Palacios Elementary, respectively. Thanks to this grant, the librarians hope to continue promoting the love of reading and literacy to students.
“Congratulations to our schools and libraries for being awarded these generous grants,” said PSJA Superintendent Dr. Jorge L. Arredondo. “We commend our librarians for finding ways to supplement their resources to further impact the love of reading among our student body.”

EDINBURG, Texas – Rio Grande Valley Sector Border Patrol (RGV) agents and local law enforcement partners disrupted four human smuggling events.
On May 23, McAllen Border Patrol Station (MCS) agents apprehended eight migrants after the driver failed to yield and a pursuit ensued. MCS camera operators observed a Ford SUV load up migrants in a well-known smuggling area near Mission and notified local law enforcement. Moments later, Mission Police Department (MPD) encountered the vehicle and attempted to initiate a vehicle stop. The driver failed to yield and led officers on a pursuit. The driver, a U.S. citizen, eventually came to a stop in a parking lot. Agents responded to assist and determined eight migrants to be illegally present in the U.S. MPD took custody of the driver.

RGV agents received information regarding a suspected human smuggling stash house located in Donna on May 23. Agents responded to the location and encountered 29 migrants identified as citizens of Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Ecuador, and Cuba. No caretaker was identified.
Later that day, RGV agents working in coordination with Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office deputies received information of a suspected stash house in Edinburg. RGV agents and local law enforcement convened at the residence and discovered three migrants who were unlawfully present in the U.S. No caretaker was identified.
On May 24, Rio Grande City Border Patrol Station agents encountered 120 non-citizens near Roma. The group was initially observed by the Texas Military Department. The large group consisted of 31 unaccompanied children, 50 family unit members, and 39 single adults. The migrants are from Cuba, South and Central America.

PHARR, Texas –PSJA North Early College High School Senior Ariella Saenz has been ranked among the top 30 right-handed pitchers in Texas by SBLive.
“Saenz stymied lineups throughout the Rio Grande Valley this year in the circle and also proved to be a valuable offensive weapon. The Raiders’ ace ended the regular season with 145 strikeouts, a 17-0 record, no home runs allowed and as the state’s leader in earned-run average (0.18) after pitching 114 ⅓ innings,” read the article.
Last January, Saenz signed a letter of intent to play softball for Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. Saenz will be graduating at the top of her class and plans to major in Business at Texas A&M University.
While at PSJA ISD, Saenz has been part of the Varsity Cheer, Varsity Softball, National Honor Society, and served as Student Council President. The athlete was also a part of the PSJA ISD Early College Program and earned an Associate Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from South Texas College earlier this month.

Additionally, Houston and Dallas are in the top five municipalities in the nation for Fortune 500 companies, with 21 and 11 respectively.

EL PASO, Texas — The El Paso Museum of Archeology invites the public to visit its new Pop-Up Photography exhibition opening Wednesday, May 25.
The exhibit will showcase art images of Jornada Mogollon Petroglyphs (rock art) taken by award-winning Las Cruces native photographer, Wayne Suggs. His photographs showcase his captivation with rock art and surrounding landscape as a way to emphasize the preservation of the rocks and landscape.
In addition to the photo exhibition, the museum will also feature ceramic displays which are part of a generous donation by Lisa M. Pugh of Las Cruces, New Mexico.
Two displays of Pueblo ceramicware include:
Micaceous pots from Taos and Picuris Pueblos in New Mexico that follow a tradition dating to the 1300s which gave pottery a unique finish by mica fragments included in the natural clay.
Potsuwii’I Revival pots from San Juan Pueblo, New Mexico created by a group of seven women in the 1930s who decided to bring back their ancestral pottery and design and ignited a resurrection of the ceramic making tradition in the San Juan pueblo. A few of the showcased pieces were made by one of the original potters; Tomasita Montoya in the 1950s to 1960s.
The El Paso Museum of Archeology is located at the foothills of the Franklin Mountains, 4301 Transmountain Road, and is open Wednesday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

EDINBURG, Texas – As the rate of COVID-19 deaths and infections eases locally, Hidalgo County will scale back its emergency operational response level. Currently, the county is at Level 1, which indicates Maximum Readiness; the county will move to Level 2, which is Escalated Operations effective immediately.
“This does not mean the threat of this terrible disease has gone away,” said Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez. “It does mean that, overall, the community has been extremely responsible in taking the necessary precautions to protect themselves and we can slightly ease up on our diligence.”
Hidalgo County has five operational levels with Level 5 being normal operations and Level 1 being the highest state of emergency. It moved to a Level 1 upon the first diagnosis of COVID in March of 2020 and has been at the highest level for over 800 days.
“I’m afraid COVID will never go away, but it is becoming as manageable as influenza,” said Eduardo Olivarez, head of Hidalgo County Health and Human Services. “In short, the public must always take precautions around people and be diligent about their hygiene, especially washing their hands.”
The new Level 2 Escalated Operations will go into effect immediately. The transition will impact the frequency of days the COVID-19 update is provided. COVID-19 update reports will be provided Tuesdays and Fridays instead of five times per week.

AUSTIN – Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed a motion for preliminary injunction today to stop the implementation of the Department of Homeland Security’s new Rule unlawfully altering asylum and parole procedures at the border. The motion follows on AG Paxton’s original complaint first filed last month.
Biden’s new Rule exacerbates loopholes in the illegal-alien removal process, prioritizes alleged efficiency over national security and costly impacts to Texas, and ignores common-sense solutions and effective border-security policies. If the Rule goes into effect, it will immediately make it much easier for illegal aliens to enter the U.S. and obtain asylum through false claims. The predictable result will be a massive increase in non-meritorious asylum claims.
“The Biden Administration has made it clear that they do not want to abide by the Constitution or the rules and regulations set by Congress, especially regarding the Texas border,” Attorney General Ken Paxton said. “Federal law requires genuine asylum and parole claims to be carefully managed and scrutinized by an immigration judge, not a bureaucrat rubber-stamping patently false claims. Not only that, but this entire Rule is just a way for this Administration to accomplish their real goal: a mass influx of illegal aliens into the United States. I’m asking the court to put a stop to the Rule before it goes into effect.”
