Mission, Texas – Beginning with the 2020-2021 school year, children in the Mission area who qualify for Pre-K3 services will be able to take advantage of those services without leaving their neighborhood school area. Mission Consolidated Independent School District (CISD) will be expanding its Pre-K3 program to include all district schools this fall. The district had piloted the program this school year at three elementary schools.

“The interest and demand for the services was so strong that we actually started to open Pre-K services at a couple of additional schools beyond the original three chosen to pilot the program,” explained Dr. Carol G. Perez, superintendent. “We are excited that the demand and interest in quality, early-childhood education is so strong in our area that we can expand the services to all schools, making it easier for our families. Now they won’t have to take their youngest to a campus outside of their traditional neighborhood Mission CISD school.”

Student for the Pre-K3 program must meet state eligibility requirements and be at least three years of age on September 1, 2020. The state eligibility requirements for the Pre-K3 student include: unable to speak and comprehend the English language, be eligible for National School Lunch Program. Other criteria that can qualify a student for the Pre-K3 program include: be the child of an active duty member of the armed forces or the reserves, been in foster care, is the child of a person eligible for the Start of Texas Award-qualifying peace officers, firefighters, or emergency medical first responders. Out-of-district transfers for the Pre-K3 program will only be accepted if the child has a sibling already attending a Mission CISD School. The children of Mission CISD employees will not have to meet the state eligibility requirements beyond the age requirement to be three years of age on or before September 1, 2020.

“This will be a full-day, pre-K3 program for our students,” added Dr. Perez. “We feel it is important to make this investment in early childhood development and are excited that our communities have responded to our pilot program so enthusiastically.”

Mission CISD elementary schools will hold a special Pre-K Roundup Pre-registration drive on February 19-20. This Pre-K Roundup will be for both the expanding Pre-K3 program and the district’s open-enrollment, full-day Pre-K4 program. There are no language or income requirements for the Pre-K4 program. Interested parents can go to the closest elementary school to take part in the Pre-K Roundup on those dates. Parents should bring their own valid form of identification, the child’s birth certificate, the child’s immunization records, proof of residence (utility bill, etc.), and the child’s social security card if one is available.

For more information about registration students for the Pre-K3 program, contact any Mission CISD elementary school, or call 956-323-5578.
