What once felt impossible has now become a life-changing achievement for Maribel Cantu, 55, who earned her Associate of Arts in Social Work from South Texas College (STC) thanks to the JagReconnect program.
JagReconnect is designed to help students who paused their education, get back on track with tuition debt payoff, one-on-one support, flexible program options and wraparound resources.
After years away from higher education, Cantu found herself wondering if college was even still an option. That doubt changed the moment she reached out to STC for help.
“Once they told me I could register at any time, I took action,” she said. “I proceeded to move forward and start again.”
For Cantu, the decision to return to school was deeply rooted in family. Her 22-year-olddaughter had experienced setbacks in her own college journey due to health challenges and learning differences. Instead of giving up, the two made a powerful decision to go back to school together.
“I told her, ‘If I go back, will you go with me?’ and she agreed,” she said. “That really filled my heart. I wanted her to succeed.”
That shared promise became the foundation of her journey forward.
Cantu chose to pursue social work driven by a heartfelt desire to serve others and make a lasting difference.
“I chose social work because I really like helping people,” she said. “I want to make a difference in people’s lives whether it’s for well-being, guidance, assistance in school or social adaptation.”
Cantu credits JagReconnect as the support system that helped her believe in herself again.
“JagReconnect really helped me reach a milestone and a dream I’ve had for a long time,” she said. “They treated me like a student, not just a number. They cared, checked in on me, connected me with resources and always sent encouragement to keep going.”
But the journey was not easy. Balancing school, family life and personal responsibilities often felt overwhelming and there were moments where she nearly walked away.
“I was on the verge of quitting during my first semester,” she said. “I was overwhelmed with everything, but I kept reminding myself of the opportunity I was given.”
In those difficult moments, it was her family’s unwavering support that kept her grounded.
Today, Cantu stands as a college graduate, still trying to process the moment she crossed the commencement stage.
“I’m still in disbelief,” she said. “Seeing myself in the cap and gown with my family watching had me speechless and full of joy.”
Looking ahead, Cantu hopes her story inspires others, especially adult learners who may feel like it’s too late.
“Just commit,” she said. “Move forward and don’t hold back. At the end of the day, it’s about bettering yourself and reaching your goals.”
Now, with her degree in hand, Cantu says she is living proof that with support, determination and opportunity, it is never too late to begin again.
