McALLEN, Texas – What if the next generation of business leaders isn’t waiting until adulthood to get started?

A new community initiative is giving Rio Grande Valley children the opportunity to discover the power of entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and leadership through real-world experience.

More than a marketplace, the “Vendiendo Con Mi Grandma & Grandpa Kids Mercadito” is designed to equip children with practical life skills that extend far beyond one day of selling. Participants will receive entrepreneurship training before the event, then launch their own business booths where they’ll gain firsthand experience in customer service, communication, problem-solving, money management, and confidence.

The initiative comes at a pivotal time for the Rio Grande Valley, where literacy and workforce development continue to be community priorities. By introducing entrepreneurship and financial education at an early age, organizers hope to spark a lifelong mindset of creativity, responsibility, and opportunity.

“This is more than a market, it’s an investment in our future,” said Cynthia Sakulenzki, President and CEO of the RGV Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. “When we equip children with entrepreneurial skills and connect families with opportunities to grow, we’re helping build a stronger, more resilient Rio Grande Valley for generations to come.”

“We believe every child deserves the opportunity to discover what’s possible,” said Eliza Garza, founder of Mija Media House and creator of the Vendiendo Con Mi Grandma & Grandpa program. “This is about helping children realize they have ideas worth sharing, gifts worth developing, and the ability to create opportunities for themselves and others.”
