McAllen, TX— The International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) is hosting a Back to School weekend Friday, August 13, through Sunday, August 15 in partnership with McAllen Public Utility. This weekend-long event is being held in honor of active duty military families. Blue Star Back to School Weekend is supported by a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts.

The weekend will include bookmark making, animal talks, shrink art, Science On a Sphere presentations, and free giveaways. Active military families will receive a special art supply bag courtesy of Blue Star Museums (while supplies last). School supply bags courtesy of McAllen Public Utility will be available on Saturday on a first-come, first-served basis. Jessica Salinas, Water Education and Communications Coordinator shares “McAllen Public Utility is excited to work with the IMAS to help families get ready for the new school year.”

Community tables will be featured throughout the weekend, including Kinderdance RGV on Friday and the McAllen Public Library on Saturday morning. Village in the Valley (VIVA) will offer an African-themed artmaking activity for visitors on Sunday.

As a Blue Star Museum, IMAS joins museums nationwide to open their doors for free to currently-serving military personnel, including National Guard and Reserve, and their families over the summer from May 15 to September 6. The military ID holder and up to five family members are eligible for free admission. The military ID holder can be either active duty service member or other dependent family member with the appropriate ID card. The active duty member does not have to be present for family members to use the program. Just bring your DD Form 1173 ID Card, or DD Form 1173-1 ID Card, for active duty military family members.  The mission of the Texas Commission on the Arts (TCA) is to advance our state economically and culturally by investing in a creative Texas. TCA supports a diverse and innovative arts community in Texas, throughout the nation and internationally by providing resources to enhance economic development, arts education, cultural tourism and artist sustainability initiatives.
