RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas – IDEA Public Schools in the Rio Grande Valley is now accepting applications for the 2027-28 school year. Right now, IDEA Rio Grande Valley currently serves nearly 34,000 students in 51 schools.
IDEA Public Schools is also excited to announce the launch of a new full-day Pre-K 4 program for the 2027-28 school year at select schools, designed to help four-year-olds learn and grow through a balance of play-based learning, academics, and social-emotional development.
“Launching full-day Pre-K 4 means more families in the Rio Grande Valley can start their child’s journey with IDEA even earlier,” said Jill Dominguez, Area Superintendent for IDEA Public Schools. “These early years matter so much. We want our youngest students to love coming to school, build confidence and curiosity, and develop the academic and social skills that will prepare them for kindergarten and beyond. We’re excited to open our doors to more four-year-olds and welcome their families into the IDEA community.”
For the 2027-28 school year, IDEA Brownsville, IDEA Harlingen, IDEA North Mission, IDEA Owassa, IDEA Palmview, IDEA Rio Grande City, IDEA Robindale, IDEA San Juan, IDEA Sports Park and IDEA Tres Lagos will offer the new program. Eligible students must be 4 years old on or before September 1, 2027, and meet at least one state pre-K eligibility requirement. The program will be taught by certified pre-K teachers and co-teachers. Free breakfast and lunch are also included. The program will help students build foundational skills and a lifelong love of learning.
The deadline to apply for the 2027-28 school year is Friday, February 19, 2027, at 11:59 p.m. Parents can submit an application here.
A random lottery will be held on February 20, 2027, to determine which scholars will fill spots available at each IDEA school. If randomly selected, families will be notified and invited to attend a “Welcome to IDEA” event where scholars celebrate their acceptance to IDEA and orient to IDEA’s culture, curriculum and expectations.
Students not randomly selected to attend IDEA will be placed on a wait list, and the wait list order will be randomly determined. Student applications on the wait list will remain on file for the rest of the 2027-2028 school year. If a spot becomes available, students will be selected from the wait list, and parents will be notified of their selection and informed of the next steps.
