McALLEN, Texas – A major drainage improvement project in South McAllen is now underway as the City advances the final initiative funded through the 2018 Bond Program. The South 2nd Street at Byron Nelson Drainage Improvements Project will enhance stormwater drainage and include roadway reconstruction in the surrounding area, including South 2nd Street, Byron Nelson, and Bales Road.
Construction activities began on April 23 along Bales Road, which will be closed to traffic from 10th Street to 2nd Street through the end of May as this phase of the project progresses.
The project includes approximately 4,000 linear feet of 18-inch to 24-inch reinforced concrete pipe installation, along with drainage appurtenances and pavement reconstruction to improve overall system performance and roadway conditions.
Cruz Hogan Consultants is serving as project engineer, and Texas Cordia Construction was awarded the $908,910 construction contract. The project is expected to continue through late July 2026.
“This project reflects our continued commitment to improving infrastructure and quality of life for residents,” said City Manager Isaac J. Tawil. “Improvements will help strengthen drainage capacity and enhance roadway safety in this area of our community.”
To keep residents informed, QR codes have been placed throughout the project area for easy access to updates and project information. Residents directly impacted by construction will also receive notices from the contractor with relevant contact information. Message boards will be installed to alert motorists of upcoming traffic impacts and construction activity.
As the final 2018 Bond drainage project, this initiative marks a significant milestone in the City’s ongoing efforts to strengthen infrastructure, reduce flooding concerns, and improve neighborhood mobility and safety.
