EDINBURG – The Child Nutrition Department from the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District reached a milestone on Thursday when the staff distributed over one million healthy meals to children as part of the District’s Curbside Meal Pickup Program.

“Today is a big day because we have served a million meals,” said ECISD Interim Superintendent Gilbert Garza Jr. “The program has been a huge success for us.”

Since March 23, the school nutrition professionals have worked hard to provide 1,014,182 meals to feed students in the school community amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The milestone highlights the hard work and dedication of the staff from the Child Nutrition Department who are ensuring that children do not go to bed hungry during these challenging times.

“We do have many parents calling in very devastated because they’ve lost their jobs. They don’t have any food. They have to walk to school to pick up their meals because at this point that’s the only thing they have to eat,” said De Escandon Elementary School Principal Ruth Torres.

Garza said that the success of the Curbside Meal Pickup Program was also due to the support and commitment from the Edinburg CISD Board of Trustees.

“Our school board kept insisting us to push the meal program,” he said. “We will continue for the rest of the school year through May with the 31 sites. We’ll have about 25 campuses that we’re going to have open throughout the summer.”
