County applauds BBQ champ and Weslaco native Fred Rob

EDINBURG – Weslaco native Fred Robles was recognized by Commissioners Court for his recent win at the 40th American Royal World Series of Barbecue on Sept. 12-15 at the Kansas Speedway in Kansas City.

The world championship competition, included participants from 39 states and 10 countries.

“To me, barbecue is something my Dad would do, and over the years, it became a passion for me,” said Robles

Robles, the owner of Rio Grande Meat, is the second person in Texas to win this coveted prize.

“For the past six years, Robles won several competitions across the county and given back to the community,” said Public Affairs Manager Julia Benitez Sullivan, who read the proclamation sponsored by Pct. 1 Commissioner David L. Fuentes.

In 2018, Robles, together with his wife, and with the help of Big Poppa Smokers and Smithfield, donated $8,500 to Estrella’s House, a childhood advocacy center in Edinburg.
