SOCORRO, Texas — Amazon and Wiwynn are expanding advanced manufacturing operations in Socorro, near El Paso, with plans to create nearly 1,000 new jobs by the end of 2027 and increase domestic production of hardware used in Amazon’s data center infrastructure.
According to the company, Wiwynn’s continued expansion is expected to bring employment at the Socorro facility to more than 2,500 workers next year. At full capacity, the operation is projected to employ about 4,000 people.
Wiwynn manufactures and integrates server systems and racks used in Amazon’s cloud and data center infrastructure. The Texas operation, Wiwynn’s first manufacturing facility in the United States, supports efforts to produce more custom hardware domestically and strengthen the U.S. supply chain.
Wiwynn President and CEO William Lin said the company is investing more than $1.6 billion in the Texas facility to increase manufacturing capacity and meet growing demand from U.S. customers.
“Through our over $1.6 billion investment in the Texas facility, we are expanding our ability to address the growing demand of U.S. customers, reinforce the resilience of the global supply chain, and create high-value career opportunities,” Lin said.
The expansion includes positions in manufacturing and industrial engineering, testing and automation, quality engineering, equipment maintenance, supply chain management, and production operations. According to the announcement, some positions will pay about 30% above the local wage base.
Wiwynn is also working with the University of Texas at El Paso, New Mexico State University, El Paso Community College and Western Technical College to develop a pipeline of skilled workers for the growing operation.
Gary Szilagyi, Amazon vice president of Annapurna Labs, said the project builds on Amazon’s broader investment in Texas while increasing domestic manufacturing capacity.
“Wiwynn’s new facility further expands this positive impact and shows what’s possible when we work with our manufacturers to strengthen the U.S. supply chain,” Szilagyi said.
Amazon reports that it has invested more than $100 billion in Texas since 2010 and employs approximately 86,000 people across the state.
The company also said more than 14,500 Texas employees have participated in its education and skills-training initiatives since 2019. Amazon currently works with 35 educational institutions in Texas through its Career Choice program, which prepays tuition for eligible employees pursuing additional education.
Additional workforce programs are planned for Texas, including an AWS Fiber Optic Fusion Splicing Certificate Course and an Information Infrastructure Pre-Apprenticeship designed to prepare people with little or no previous experience for skilled trades supporting cloud infrastructure.
The Socorro expansion comes as investment in data centers, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence continues to drive demand for servers, networking equipment, and other advanced infrastructure manufactured in the United States.
