In a recent engaging conversation on 710 AM Radio, Sergio Sanchez welcomed William Dietrich, the Interim Port Director and CEO of the Port of Brownsville, for an insightful update on the port’s developments and its increasing synergy with SpaceX and other significant projects. Dietrich highlighted the unique role the Port of Brownsville plays in supporting SpaceX’s ambitious operations, including the importation of large modules by sea, which are vital for the aerospace company’s expansion and future launches.
SpaceX’s rapid growth and its plans to expand operations to cover a million square feet in Brownsville were discussed, signaling a potential for a closer relationship between the port and SpaceX. Dietrich provided updates on employment opportunities, particularly with Bechtel, the port’s prime contractor for the liquefied natural gas export terminal. Over 50 positions are currently open, with a notable emphasis on hiring locally, maintaining that 73% of workers at the Rio Grande LNG site are from the Rio Grande Valley. This statistic is viewed positively, supporting local employment and economic growth.
The interview also touched on the potential challenge of fulfilling employment needs as projects scale up, suggesting a likely increase in workers relocating or returning to South Texas. This reflects the underestimation of the local workforce’s capacity and the advantageous transnational dynamic of the region.
Lastly, Dietrich highlighted the interest in the port’s business park, especially from the food industry.
