AUSTIN, Texas – The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) is encouraging Texans to shop at small businesses during the state’s 2026 Sales Tax Holiday, which runs from Friday, Aug. 7, through Sunday, Aug. 9.
NFIB Texas State Director Jeff Burdett said the annual tax-free weekend allows families to reduce back-to-school expenses while supporting local businesses.
“The back-to-school tax holiday provides an excellent opportunity for Texas families to make the most of their budgets while investing in the local businesses that serve our communities,” Burdett said.
He said small businesses play a central role in the state’s economy by creating jobs and supporting schools and local charities.
“Small businesses are the foundation of our state’s economy. They create good-paying jobs while supporting our schools and local charities. Every purchase made at a small business during the sales tax holiday weekend helps boost the Lone Star State’s economy. It’s a small way to make a big difference,” Burdett said.
According to the Texas Comptroller’s Office, most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced at less than $100 qualify for the sales tax exemption during the annual tax-free weekend.
Qualifying items may be purchased tax free from Texas retail stores as well as online or catalog sellers doing business in Texas. In most cases, shoppers do not need to provide an exemption certificate to receive the tax exemption on eligible purchases.
The Comptroller’s Office said the sales tax holiday begins Friday, Aug. 7, and continues through midnight Sunday, Aug. 9.
The tax exemption applies only to qualifying items purchased during the designated sales tax holiday period. Items purchased before or after the holiday are not eligible for the exemption, and no tax refunds are available for purchases made outside the qualifying dates.
