AUSTIN – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is seeking public assistance to identify a woman whose remains were found in rural Refugio County in 1992, and to hold her killer accountable. Texas Crime Stoppers has increased the reward to $6,000 for tips leading to an arrest, provided the information is received before the next Texas Rangers cold case is featured.
On March 2, 1992, a pipeline crew discovered the woman’s remains under dense brush on a ranch along FM 2678, about four miles east of Refugio. Investigators determined she died from a gunshot wound and had been at the location for one to three years. She is described as white or Hispanic, 20 to 35 years old, and approximately 5 feet 3 inches tall. Clothing found at the scene included a long coat, black leotards, a short black dress, a red belt, white knee-high boots, and a red earring. No identification was found.
In 2020, forensic artists used updated anthropological analysis to create a new facial reconstruction image. To date, no identifications or arrests have been made.
To be eligible for the cash reward, tips must be submitted through one of two methods:
- Call:Â Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-252-TIPS (8477).
- Online:Â Submit a tip via the DPS website, selecting “Cold Cases Featured” and “Cold Case.”
This investigation is part of a bi-monthly DPS program highlighting unsolved homicides. Because murder has no statute of limitations, investigators will pursue this case until it is resolved.
