U.S. Congressman Eligio de la Garza, at the podium, died recently at the age of 89, leaving a legacy of public service and meaningful legislation, including support for higher education initiatives that lives on today at UTRGV. In 2012, he donated the voluminous collection of his documents to then UT Pan American, a collection housed today at UTRGV. And in 2000, a scholarship fund was established to create the E. “Kika” de la Garza Endowed Scholarship, for students interested in pursuing government or public service. (Courtesy of UTRGV Special Collections)
