EDINBURG, Texas – The Region One Education Service Center (ESC) Special Education Program will gather over 200 special education educators and parents on June 13 and 14 for a comprehensive learning hub highlighting the latest instructional strategies and assessment instruments for special education students.

The two-day event, which is a combination of the Region One ESC Special Education Institute and Early Childhood Symposium, offers interventions and knowledge to advocate for inclusive practices in classroom instruction.

According to Region One ESC Special Education Specialist Diana Saenz, Inclusive Education is defined as the practice of educating all students, regardless of any challenges they may have, in age-appropriate general education classes with the proper accommodations and support.

The two-day event offers sessions on early childhood special education, inclusive practices, behavior, low incidence disabilities, leadership, evaluation and post-secondary transition.

Father and son, Nik and Chris Nikic, will open the conference with an inspirational keynote address. Chris Nikic is a 21-year-old triathlete with Down Syndrome and other associated disabilities. The father-son duo published two books centered on their 1% Better Challenge, a mindset that helps others achieve their goals by measuring success by improvements rather than victories.

In addition to learning from area experts, parents and educators will have the opportunity to experience new assistive technologies and information from top special education organizations and exhibitors.
