San Antonio (July 1, 2020) – The San Antonio International Airport (SAT) will unveil two new art exhibits in each of its terminals this Friday as part of the rotating gallery series known as “The Galleries @ SAT.” The two exhibits celebrate San Antonio’s rich military history. One of the exhibits features the winners of the “Air Force Art Contest.” In 2017 the Air Force Services Agency (AFSVA) launched an Air Force wide art contest.  The contest is an opportunity for America’s Airmen and their families to showcase their artistic talents.  The AFSVA received 1650 entries from 920 artists.  Each artist could enter two works in a variety of media. The winners were selected from Air Force bases around the world and are now on display at SAT.

“SAT is proud of its partnership with the USAF and the AFSVA and look forward to many more years of collaboration in Military City, USA”, said Matt Evans, Arts & Culture Manager, San Antonio International Airport.

“City of Service” is the second exhibit. It is on loan to the airport as part of a partnership with the City of San Antonio’s Department of Arts & Culture and the City’s Office of Military and Veterans Affairs.  The exhibit was first released in 2019 to celebrate the history and legacy of San Antonio’s military service members and bases. “City of Service” features two-dimensional works by a diverse group of 19 San Antonio-based artists, some of whom are military veterans. Subjects of the artwork include: the Women’s Army Corps (WAC), Edgewood ISD students who served in the Vietnam War, San Antonio’s military bases, the Buffalo Soldiers and Tuskegee Airmen of San Antonio, Eric Alva (first U.S. service member wounded in Iraq, who later became a LGBTQ community leader), U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Olga Custodio (first Latina military pilot in the U.S.), Cleto L. Rodriguez, veteran homelessness, and other topics.
