MISSION, Texas — Ruben D. Plata, who has served for nearly two decades on the Mission City Council, announced on July 13, 2026, on social media that he is running for mayor of Mission, Texas. Plata currently serves as Mayor Pro Tem and City Council Member for Place 2, following his first election to the council in October 2007. He has also been re-elected through successive elections, including unopposed victories in 2020 and 2024.
In his announcement, Plata said, “I am proud to formally announce my candidacy for Mayor of Mission, Texas.”
Plata said his campaign will focus on continued growth and economic development for the city. “My primary focus is to ensure that our city continues to grow, thrive, and prosper,” he said. “I am committed to strengthening our local economy, enhancing our quality of life, and fostering economic resilience and long-term prosperity for all who call Mission home.”
He also said his campaign would emphasize respect, integrity, professionalism, and public accountability. “As we embark on this journey together, I pledge to run a campaign rooted in respect, integrity, and professionalism. Our community deserves nothing less. I am committed to listening to every voice, leading with accountability, and always putting the best interests of Mission first.”
Plata concluded his announcement by thanking residents and asking for their support. “I look forward to earning your support, hearing your ideas, and working alongside you to keep Mission moving forward,” he said. “Together, we can build an even brighter future for our great City of Mission.”
A graduate of the University of Texas–Pan American with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting, Plata began his career in banking and mortgage lending, developing experience in finance, business development, and organizational management before entering public office.
Before joining the Mission City Council, Plata served as president of the Valley Bankers Association. In 2007, the U.S. Small Business Administration recognized him as the Financial Services Champion for South Texas for his commitment to expanding opportunities for entrepreneurs and small businesses. In 2006, he was named Mission’s Man of the Year in recognition of his volunteerism and community leadership.
As Mayor Pro Tem, Plata has participated in municipal policymaking while assuming mayoral responsibilities when required. During his tenure, he has supported economic development initiatives, including commercial expansion, infrastructure improvements, industrial recruitment, and projects aimed at strengthening Mission’s competitiveness in South Texas.
Plata also serves as president of Mission’s Binational Sister Cities Committee, where he has promoted cooperation between communities in the United States and Mexico through cultural, educational, and economic partnerships. He has said that cross-border collaboration creates opportunities for commerce, investment, tourism, and regional prosperity. He has also participated in Mission’s annual Mayor’s International Brunch, which brings together government officials, business leaders, diplomats, and community representatives to promote regional cooperation.
His civic service has included leadership or membership roles with organizations such as the Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce, Mission Historical Museum, United Way of South Texas, Mission Boys & Girls Club, Mission Economic Development Authority, Regional Mobility Authority, North American Butterfly Association, and the Rotary Club of Mission.
Within city government, Plata has supported balanced financial management, public safety, infrastructure investment, quality public services, and policies intended to encourage sustainable business growth. His background in finance has contributed to discussions involving budgeting, economic development, and long-term planning.
