Laredo, TX — Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) released the following statement after the Department of Labor released its May jobs report, which showed the U.S. unemployment rate fell to 13.3% as the economy gained 2.5 million jobs:

“The May jobs report demonstrates that the U.S. economy and workforce is recovering as a result of the actions taken by Congress in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Legislation like the CARES Act and the PPP Flexibility Act prioritized American workers and small businesses, kickstarting our markets and putting our citizens back to work.

“However, I realize there is more we must accomplish before all Americans can return to a normal way of life. As all 50 states slowly start to slowly reopen, I will help to establish a nation-wide testing and tracing strategy. We cannot allow Americans to go back to work without a plan to contain additional COVID-19 outbreaks that may occur.

“To build upon this encouraging jobs report, Congress will continue to pass legislation that delivers real results for small businesses and families. That is why, in May, I helped pass the Heroes Act; urgently-needed legislation that will only build on this promising jobs report. Now, it is time for the Senate pass the Heroes Act so Congress can continue to meet the needs of the American people and allocate further resources to save lives while the economy continues to recover.

“There is no time to waste, we must act now and deliver for American families.

“As a member of the Bipartisan White House Task Force, I am committed to working across party lines to support American businesses and their workers as our nation reopens and our economy rebounds.”
