McALLEN, Texas – Natural Grocers, the Colorado-based organic and health-focused grocery chain, is preparing to open a new location in McAllen, bringing its wellness-centered retail model to the Rio Grande Valley.
The company is renovating the former Trampoline Park location on South 10th Street in McAllen. Permit information tied to the project indicates a completion projected for August 28, 2026.
Known for its focus on organic groceries, vitamins, supplements, and nutrition education, Natural Grocers has built a national presence by emphasizing ingredient standards and wellness-focused products. The retailer states that all produce sold in its stores is “100% organic and GMO-free,” while also promoting pasture-based dairy products and meats raised without antibiotics or hormones.
The McAllen location reflects continued retail growth in the Rio Grande Valley as national brands increasingly expand into South Texas markets.
Natural Grocers traces its origins to 1955, when Margaret and Philip Isely founded the business in Lakewood, Colorado. According to the company, the couple launched the operation after Margaret Isely experienced health problems following the birth of her second child and turned to nutrition-based approaches after “conventional medicine was unable to help her.”
The company states Margaret Isely used principles from nutrition advocate Adelle Davis’ book Let’s Get Well to improve her health through “eating nutrient-dense, natural foods, and taking dietary supplements.”
Natural Grocers says the experience inspired the Isely family to promote nutrition education and affordable access to healthy foods. With what the company describes as borrowed $200, the couple began going door-to-door in Golden, Colorado, lending books on nutrition, distributing samples of whole-grain bread, and later returning to discuss supplements and natural foods with customers.
“Our parents taught us that Nutrition Education is the foundation for building health and being in control of your life, and that healthy living should be affordable,” the company states.
Today, Natural Grocers operates more than 170 stores across 21 states and continues to promote nutrition education, affordability, and wellness-focused grocery retailing as core parts of its business model.
“What started out as a Colorado-based company has now grown to over 170 stores and counting in 21 states,” the company states. “Together we are spreading our parents’ dream of igniting a good4u revolution across the country… and the world.”
