Campaign announcement cites investments in infrastructure and public safety

MISSION, Texas — Mission Mayor Norie Gonzalez Garza announced her candidacy for re-election, saying she intends to continue the work undertaken by her administration since she took office in 2022.

Garza said she remains committed to responsible leadership and building on the city’s progress. Her announcement cited work by the Mission City Council, city administrators, employees, businesses, and community partners in infrastructure, public safety, economic development, parks, tourism, and quality-of-life projects.

The announcement said Mission opened the Rio Grande Valley’s first night golf experience at Starlight Shary Municipal Golf Course during Garza’s administration.

It also cited the preservation and redevelopment of the historic Cimarron Country Club through a project that includes more than $14 million in planned private investment. According to the announcement, the project is intended to improve drainage infrastructure, increase flood protection and support economic growth.

Garza’s administration has advanced road improvements, drainage and flood-mitigation projects, water and wastewater system expansions and lift station improvements, the announcement said.

In public safety, the city secured more than $2.2 million for police equipment, officer safety and technology, according to the announcement. Mission also implemented the BRINC First Responder drone program and continued modernizing its Fire and Emergency Medical Services operations.

The city’s in-house EMS program has generated more than $5.6 million in revenue while improving response times and access to emergency medical services, according to the announcement.

Garza’s announcement also cited investments in parks, recreation, tourism and family amenities. Lions Park, which has an all-inclusive playground, continues to provide recreational opportunities for children of all abilities.

Phase II improvements at Lions Park are scheduled to begin in 2027. The project will add accessibility features and expand inclusive recreational opportunities, according to the announcement.

The city has also pursued nearly $1 million in recommended federal funding to improve and expand the Mission Animal Shelter.

Looking ahead, Mayor Garza’s campaign will focus on responsible growth, critical infrastructure, economic opportunity, support for locally owned small businesses and entrepreneurs, stronger neighborhoods, first responders, fiscal responsibility and high-quality city services. These priorities will guide the campaign’s effort to preserve Mission’s values while continuing to drive the city forward.
