PHARR, Texas – Despite higher fuel costs, AAA Texas estimates 3.7 million Texans will travel 50 or more miles from home this Memorial Day Weekend.

To avoid congestion and delays on state highways, drivers are encouraged to leave early to avoid afternoon and evening rush hour traffic, especially this Thursday and Friday, between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Travel Tips:

  • Inspect the condition of your vehicle before you head out. Flat tires and dead batteries are among the top reasons drivers are left stranded.
  • Slow down. Not only are slower speeds safer they can also help increase fuel economy.
  • Properly inflate tires to also increase fuel efficiency.
  • Buckle up. Make sure everyone in the vehicle has their seatbelt on. Now through May 31 during TxDOT’s Click It or Ticket campaign, officers statewide are doing heightened enforcement of seat belt laws.
  • Move Over, Slow Down. Remember to vacate the lane closest to first responder vehicles on the roadside with their emergency lights activated or slow down 20 mph below the posted speed limit.
  • Drive Sober, No Regrets. Never allow anyone who’s had any amount of alcohol or drugs behind the wheel. Driving under the influence endangers you and everyone else on the road.
