McAllen Public Utility (MPU) continues to invest in the future of McAllen. With continued growth in south McAllen, MPU invested $56 million in a new 10 million gallons per day (MGD) Biological Nutrient Removal Wastewater Treatment Plant, known as a BNR plant.

The new BNR plant will remove nitrates, a nutrient that affects aquatic life in the Arroyo Colorado, and other pollutants and has future capacity to serve the residents, businesses, and visitors of the city’s southern portion for the next 25 years.  The new BNR plant consists of the following improvements:

  • Energy efficient fine bubble diffused air system;
  • Ultraviolet light disinfection system;
  • SCADA system (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition);
  • New headwork includes fine screens and grit removal systems to remove rags and inorganic material;
  • Bio-filter odor control system; and
  • Three (3) new standby generators with a combined capacity of 2.5 Megawatts to maintain essential pumping operations during emergencies in order to continue to treat and disinfect wastewater.

With continued foresight from the MPU Board of Trustees, MPU will continue to invest in projects that will protect public health, the environment, support economic growth and enhance the quality of life of our citizens, business, and future generations.
