The revelation came as a shock to him and his family, as the disease was detected through routine screening. Fortunately, it was caught at an early stage, and the mayor expressed confidence that with proper treatment, he will overcome it.
Mayor Garza emphasized the importance of early detection, urging men over the age of 40 to undergo regular PSA testing and prostate screenings. He credited his wife for encouraging him to get routine blood work, which ultimately led to his diagnosis.
“This is something that has come as a complete shock to me and my family. Fortunately, this cancer has been detected at an early stage, and I am confident, with the proper treatment, I am going to beat this,” said Garza. “I encourage all men over 50, and even over 40, to begin your regular PSA testing and prostate screening. It’s a simple blood test, and that’s all it took for me.”
Alongside this personal revelation, Mayor Garza announced that he would not seek re-election at the end of his current term, citing his need to focus on his health and family. However, he reassured the community that he will continue to serve as mayor until his term concludes, ensuring a smooth transition for Edinburg’s leadership.
“After consulting with my family and through prayer, I have decided not to seek re-election. I will fully complete my current term but will take the time to focus on my health and my family,” Garza stated. “This decision was incredibly tough because I truly love our community. But this diagnosis has been a wake-up call.”
The mayor expressed profound gratitude to the people of Edinburg, city staff, and council members who have supported him throughout his tenure. He also reaffirmed that the city’s operations will continue without disruption.
“I love this community. My family and I have been welcomed with open arms, and I want Edinburg to prosper. I do not doubt that we will keep moving forward. The city operates 24/7, and I did not want this to be a distraction—I just wanted to address it head-on.”
Prostate Cancer in Men: A Common Yet Treatable Disease
Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting men worldwide. According to the American Cancer Society:
- About 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime.
- Approximately 288,000 new cases of prostate cancer are expected in the U.S. this year.
- The disease is more prevalent in men over the age of 65, but screening is recommended for those over 40-50, depending on risk factors.
- Over 34,000 deaths are expected annually, but the survival rate is high when detected early.
- African American men are at a higher risk and should consider earlier screenings.
Mayor Garza’s decision to publicly disclose his diagnosis stresses the importance of early screening and proactive healthcare. His courage in sharing his journey is expected to encourage many men to take preventive steps and prioritize their health.
The Edinburg community stands behind Mayor Garza, offering prayers and support as he battles the disease with resilience and optimism.
