McALLEN, Texas — The City of McAllen will host a groundbreaking ceremony for the McAllen Lateral Channel Improvements Project February 24 at 10:00 a.m. , a major infrastructure initiative designed to enhance stormwater conveyance, increase storage capacity, and expand hike-and-bike trail connectivity in north McAllen.
The McAllen Lateral Channel Improvements Project will upgrade a key section of the McAllen Lateral Drainage Channel between the Morris and Northeast Regional Stormwater Detention Facilities. The initiative aims to improve stormwater flow, reduce flooding risk, and expand mobility options for the community.
Planned Improvements Include:
- Excavation of nearly 150,000 cubic yards of earth to expand the drainage ditch.
- Replacement of the single‑span bridge at N. 2nd Street.
- Installation of 2,000 feet of new storm drainage pipe and 10,000 square yards of concrete erosion protection.
- Construction of a new Hike & Bike Trail with improved connectivity along N. 10th Street and N. 2nd Street, including two below‑grade road crossings.
The project cost is $5,689,125.11, funded through the City’s Drainage Fee Fund.
Engineering services are provided by Cruz‑Hogan Consultants, Inc., and construction will be carried out by E‑CON Group, LLC.
Construction is expected to take approximately 18 months, spanning December 2025 through May 2027.
