Grimes Road Upgrade Completed in Cameron County

Cameron County announced the successful completion of the Grimes Road Improvement Project, a vital infrastructure initiative designed to enhance mobility, safety, and economic growth in the region. The project officially broke ground on Friday, August 2,2024, and culminated with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday, December 8, 2025.

“This project represents the very best of what can be achieved when local governments work together for the benefit of our residents,” said Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr. “The Grimes Road Improvement Project will serve our community for decades to come, improving connectivity and supporting future growth in Cameron County and the City of Harlingen.”

The Grimes Road Improvement Project included the construction of a four-lane roadway featuring grading and asphaltic concrete pavement, lime-treated subgrade and flexible base, culvert structures and signing, delineation, and pavement markings. The project length measures approximately two (2) miles and spans 592 feet west of SL 499 to FM 509. Total cost of construction is $1,929,263.

The project funding was made possible through a strong partnership between Cameron County and the City of Harlingen.Cameron County provided engineering/design plans, coordinated utility adjustments, managed construction provided by PublicWorks Precinct No. 3 (with assistance from Precinct No. 1), and contributed $520,901.07 in funding. City of Harlingencontributed

$1,408,362.15 in funding and relocated city-owned utilities as necessary.
