EDINBURG, Texas – The Edinburg Police Department has concluded its high-visibility DWI enforcement wave, declaring the operation a major success in keeping local roads safe during the busy summer travel and Independence Day holiday period.
During the enforcement period from June 19 through July 6, officers made a total of 34 DWI arrests. As expected, a significant portion of those arrests occurred over the long holiday weekend, with 13 happening between Thursday, July 2, and Monday, July 6.
This enforcement surge was powered by a Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) Impaired Driving Mobilization grant, managed by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). The grant funded critical overtime pay, allowing Edinburg PD to deploy extra officers on the streets with the sole mission of locating and removing intoxicated drivers.

Our primary objective with this initiative was to prevent crashes, injuries, and fatalities caused by intoxicated drivers. We want everyone in our community to make it home safely, thanks to the hard work of our officers and funding from TxDOT, we successfully removed dozens of dangerous drivers from our roads before tragedy struck. Moving forward, we urge everyone to support our Make a Plan campaign. Get a sober ride home. The best way to avoid a tragedy is to make that decision before you ever start drinking.
Edinburg Police Chief Chief Jaime Ayala
The Edinburg Police Department reminds the public that there is absolutely no “safe” amount of alcohol to consume before driving. Impairment slows reaction times, skews judgment, and turns an ordinary vehicle into a deadly weapon.
As a reminder to motorists year-round, Edinburg is always a No-Refusal City. Drivers who choose to get behind the wheel impaired will be caught, and the department maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy to protect the public.
