Dr. Fred Farias III joins the McAllen Heritage Center Board of Trustees

McALLEN, Texas – John M. Kreidler, Chairman of the board of the McAllen Heritage Center (MHC) – museum of history and culture is pleased to announce the museums newest board member, Dr. Fred Farias III, OD, MS, FAAO.

John states, “Dr. Farias has always been a great friend and supporter of the MHC and we are proud to have him join our board.  This is an especially important phase for the museum as the construction of the new building is due to begin later this year.”   Dr. Farias is a pillar of the community and is an accomplished optometrist and seasoned educator with a robust background in clinical operations and a profound commitment to advancing optometric education. His list of professional education accomplishments is impressive as is his service to community.  His impressive record of activities and appointments to state boards includes but is not limited to: the MD Anderson Cancer Center Board of Visitors, Appointment to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and Texas Optometry Board, numerous University of Texas educational boards, Honorary Commission Admiral Texas Navy.  His community involvement and service includes the McAllen Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Vannie E. Cook Cancer Center, Rio Grande Valley Arthritis Foundation, McAllen Chamber Governmental Affairs Council Chairman, Futuro RGV Civic Organization Advisory Board.  He is also a graduate of the Leadership McAllen program.  For his dedication to service, Dr. Farias has been honored often and most recently he received the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Presidents Medal of Honor Award.  

He is a McAllen native who possesses a love of history and a supporter of historic preservation.  “Working with Fred is such an honor and I value him as an individual and friend I have known since our McHi days,” states Elva M. Cerda, MHC Executive Director.

The museum is located in downtown McAllen at 301 S. Main in the former U.S. Post Office.  The USPO was built in 1934 and is a Texas Historic Medallion Landmark building.  The museum was founded in 2006 and has been serving the community and Region since 2008.  There is no admission fee although door donations are accepted and there is free parking for visitors behind the building.  Operating hours are Wednesday through Friday 1pm to 5pm and Saturday 12pm to 4pm.  For more information please call (956) 681-2860 or check our website:  www.mcallenheritagecenter.com or our social pages on Facebook or Instagram.
