In a vital move this week, Congressman Henry Cuellar cast a supportive vote for H.R. 7176, the Unlocking U.S. Domestic LNG Potential Act, signaling a strong commitment to American energy security and economic growth. Cuellar’s decision comes in direct response to the Biden Administration’s recent pause on the expansion of liquified natural gas (LNG) terminals, a decision he finds not only concerning but potentially detrimental to critical infrastructure and job markets, particularly in Texas.

Highlighting the impact of the administration’s decision, Cuellar expressed deep concern for ports such as Corpus Christi, Texas—a vital hub for LNG and a key player in the nation’s energy export capacity. “The pause will hurt Ports such as Corpus Christi, Texas, and hinder American energy security,” stated Cuellar, underscoring the immediate and long-term implications for both local and national energy strategies.

Cuellar’s advocacy for LNG is rooted in his representation of one of the country’s most active oil and gas-producing regions. He emphasized the significance of supporting LNG, not just as a matter of policy preference but as an essential element of his constituents’ livelihoods. The sector is responsible for over 40,000 jobs in his district alone, contributing millions of dollars in tax revenue and bolstering the local and state economy.

Ongoing geopolitical tensions, especially the war in Ukraine, have clearly shown how much the world relies on Russian natural gas. In this situation, Cuellar emphasized the United States’ role in giving Europe a more secure and reliable source of energy.” The United States has stepped up, and Europe has counted on American LNG exports to stop depending on their reliance on Russia – 68% of U.S. LNG exports are to Europe,” he noted, emphasizing the critical role of U.S. LNG exports in global energy security.

H.R. 7176, according to Cuellar, is not just legislation but a strategic move to strengthen the nation’s energy independence and security. By supporting this bill, Cuellar believes that the U.S. can solidify its position as a global leader in clean energy production, thereby enhancing national security and contributing to international stability.

In conclusion, Congressman Cuellar reaffirmed his dedication to American energy independence, asserting his ongoing efforts to ensure that the U.S. continues to produce the world’s cleanest oil and natural gas. He also reiterated his commitment to serving his constituents, offering assistance through his various offices in Washington, DC, Laredo, San Antonio, and Rio Grande City.

Cuellar’s stance on H.R. 7176 underscores a broader debate on the future of American energy policy, balancing economic growth, environmental stewardship, and national security in a rapidly changing global landscape. As the bill progresses, Cuellar’s advocacy for LNG and American energy security will undoubtedly play a significant role in shaping the discourse and policy directions in the coming months.
