The San Juan City Commission and Parks & Recreation Department recognized two outstanding young athletes, Mia Sosa, and Miguel Flores, for being named the 2018 Texas Amateur Athletic Federation (TAAF) Local Male and Female Athletes of the Year.  TAAF is a state-wide nonprofit organization established in 1925 to promote the development of physical education and encourage all amateur athletics and competitions. TAAF’s membership consists of over 140 organizations with over 210,000 participants. “They had an amazing year, and both represented the city very well,” stated Patrick Willingham, San Juan Parks & Recreation Director.

Mia Sosa, the TAAF Female Athlete of the Year for the city of San Juan, is currently a 6th grader at Audie Murphy Middle School and has participated in youth soccer, volleyball, basketball, cross country, and softball for the last five years. Mia won 2 silver medals and 1 bronze in the 4X100 meter relay at the TAAF Regional Track & Field Meet held in Pharr – which included participants from Laredo to Brownsville – and qualified for the state competition which took place in August at Texas A&M University in College Station.
