AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) approved a $750,000 grant for the City of Peñitas to support the Zamora wastewater connection lift station improvements project, a critical infrastructure investment that will help connect homes to the city’s wastewater system and reduce reliance on septic tanks and cesspools. The Lift Station Project will help integrate an existing unused wastewater collection system and provide additional service connections for residential homes currently using septic tanks or cesspools. The work includes construction of a new lift station, gravity line, and force main connection to an existing force main that routes to the city’s current wastewater treatment plant.

In 2025, the Legislature specifically directed TWDB to provide these funds to the City of Peñitas under Senate Bill 1 as part of a statewide directive to use $581 million from the General Revenue Fund appropriated in House Bill 500 to provide funding for 34 infrastructure, flood, wastewater, and water-supply projects across Texas. House Bill 500 which passed during the 89th Regular Session was co-sponsored by Senator Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa.

Senator Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa expressed his support for this funding, stating: “The grant approval by the TWDB reflects the Legislature’s effort to direct water infrastructure funding to pressing local needs in the Rio Grande Valley. This grant will help the City of Peñitas connect more residents to reliable wastewater service, reduce reliance on septic systems and cesspools, and strengthen the city’s infrastructure for future growth. Investments like this make a real difference in the daily lives of families. I appreciate the leadership of Chairman Oscar Longoria for submitting this budget amendment in the Texas House, and the Texas Water Development Board for moving quickly to distribute these funds. By working together, state and local leaders are delivering a project that will serve the people of Peñitas for years to come.”Information source: Office of Senato
