EDINBURG, Texas – Edinburg Mayor Ramiro Garza Jr. has just been selected to serve on the prestigious National Civic League (NCL) Board of Directors during the National League of Cities (NLC) City Summit in Tampa, Florida. Mayor Garza joins a distinguished group of civic leaders from across the country, including mayors from Rochester, NY, and Tulsa, OK.

In his new role, Mayor Garza will collaborate with fellow board members to provide organizational and fiscal guidance to the NCL President and staff. Board members are entrusted with the fiduciary responsibility of steering the organization toward a sustainable future through sound governance and financial management. This includes ensuring that the nonprofit has adequate resources to advance its mission of fostering civic engagement and building equitable, thriving communities.

“I am deeply honored to join the National Civic League Board of Directors and represent Edinburg on this national platform,” Mayor Garza said. “Serving alongside leaders from across the country is an incredible opportunity to exchange ideas and further our shared vision of creating more engaged, resilient communities. I look forward to contributing to the League’s vital mission of fostering civic engagement and celebrating innovation.”

The National Civic League, founded in 1894 by a group of civic leaders that included Theodore Roosevelt and Louis Brandeis, has been at the forefront of promoting civic engagement for over 125 years. The League’s mission is to inspire, support, and recognize inclusive approaches to community decision-making, advancing civic engagement to create equitable and thriving communities. Mayor Garza joins esteemed company, including Henry Cisneros, the former U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, former Mayor of San Antonio, and a former board chair of the National Civic League, who now serves as an honorary board member.

One of the cornerstones of the National Civic League’s work is its annual All-America City Award, which honors ten outstanding communities each year for excellence in civic engagement, local innovation, and cross-sector collaboration. The City of Edinburg made history in June 2024 by securing its fourth All-America City title, a testament to the city’s commitment to civic innovation and collaboration. As part of his duties, Mayor Garza will play an integral role in ensuring that the League continues to empower communities across the country to find success through civic engagement.
